Bhopal: Authorities of a local civic body in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior district have announced cash award of Rs 100 per photograph of people defecating in the open in the area.

The Gwalior Municipal Corporation has declared this rather unique incentive, officials said on Thursday.

The order encouraged people to go around the municipality area to catch people defecating in the open in their cameras and send them to the secretaries of the panchayats of their respective areas to get the award money. The panchayat secretaries have been asked to circulate the pictures and videos in different social media to shame people who have yet to abdicate their old habit of defecating in the open instead of using toilets in their houses.

Opposition Congress, however, took strong exception to the order. “The order sounds very strange. The civic body authorities are announcing monetary awardx for taking ‘dirty’ pictures of people. This is also an attack on the privacy of people,” a local Congress leader said.
