Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Police is “questioning” one of its constable drivers in connection with “militancy-related incidents” after he was detained by it earlier this week.

Touseef Ahmed was some months ago deputed as driver with ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) MLA Aijaz Ahmad Mir. Though a local media report had said that he was picked up by the police in connection with the smuggling of narcotics, the police sources said he was being questioned in connection with the July-10 terror attack at Botengo in southern Anantnag in which seven Amarnath pilgrims were killed and nineteen others wounded, and some other militancy-related incidents.

Superintendent of police (SP) Shopian, Ambarkar Shriram Dinkar, said, “Touseef is cooperating with the investigators. He was deputed as driver some seven months ago from the security wing of Jammu and Kashmir police. He has been detained in a terrorism related case.”

Another report said Ahmed was detained for his alleged links with militants, who may have been involved in the Anantnag terror incident.

He is a resident of Chokura village of Pulwama district and had been deputed as driver with the MLA from security wing of the J&K Police. He had earlier been associated with the J&K police’s counterinsurgency Special Operations Group (SOG).

Meanwhile, President Pranab Mukherjee has sent a message to Jammu and Kashmir Governor N.N. Vohra, condemning the recent terror attack on Amarnath pilgrims and asked the state government and security agencies to ensure that the guilty were brought to justice.
