FM undergoes kidney transplant

New Delhi: Union finance minister Arun Jaitley on Monday underwent a successful kidney transplant at the country’s premier health institute All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

The AIIMS in a statement said that the both the donor and the recipient are stable and recovering speedily as well.

A senior AIIIMs official said that Mr Jaitley, 65, was admitted to the hospital on Saturday and taken to the operation theatre at 8 am on Monday.

“Union minister Mr Jaitley underwent a renal transplant on Monday. The surgery has been successful. Both the donor and the recipient are stable and recovering well,” he added.

Mr Jaitley suffering from a kidney ailment, has been undergoing dialysis for the last one month was working from controlled environment at his home. According to sources, nephrologist Dr Sandeep Guleria from Apollo Hospital, also the brother of AIIMS Director Randeep Guleria, who is a family friend, was part of the team performed the transplant.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi, on Monday, wished a speedy recovery to Mr Jaitley, who undergone a kidney transplant surgery at AIIMS.

“I’m happy to hear that Jaitley ji’s kidney transplant surgery today at AIIMS went well. I wish him a speedy recovery,” Mr Gandhi said in a tweet. Union home minister Rajnath Singh also wished Mr Jaitley for quick recovery.

“Happy to know about the successful kidney transplant surgery of Shri @arunjaitley at AIIMS, Delhi. I pray for his and the donor’s quick recovery and good health,” Mr Singh said in tweet on Monday after the succcessful surgery of the finance minister. Mr Jaitley, who cancelled his scheduled visit to London for the 10th India-UK Economic and Financial Dialogue next week, had confirmed his illness in a tweet on the 6th of April.

“I am being treated for kidney related problems & certain infections that I have contracted,” he had tweeted. Mr Jaitley did not elaborate but said he was currently working from controlled environment at home.

“The future course of my treatment would be determined by the doctors treating me,” he had said.

In September 2014, Mr Jaitley underwent a bariatric surgery to treat weight gain because of a long-standing diabetic condition.
