Kolkata: In the backdrop of demonetisation, two sack-full of torn and damaged currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 were recovered from a garbage vat in the southern part of the city's Golf Green area on Sunday.

Locals spotted the sacks with torn pieces of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes stacked in them in the garbage vat on Golf Club Road in the Jadavpur police station limits early this morning, a police official said.

After being informed, policemen recovered the sacks, he said.

"We are examining these notes and trying to find out their origin. We are checking the CCTV footages in the surroundings," he said.
