BJP candidate attacked in Bihar

Around 60 per cent of voting was recorded for the eight Lok Sabha seats that went to polls in the sixth phase in Bihar on Sunday.

Patna: BJP candidate from Bihar’s West Champaran Lok Sabha seat Sanjay Jaiswal was rescued by his supporters after unidentified people attacked him near one of the booths during the sixth phase of polling on Sunday.

Sources from Bettiah said that a mob carrying wooden sticks and rods attacked him while he was visiting polling booths in his constituency. However, police and authorities intervened and handled the situation.

“His bodyguards had to open fire in order disperse the violent mob. The incident took place when he objected to unfair means near one of the polling stations. The police later intervened and handled the situation,” Sources said. Mr Jaiswal is a two time MP from West Champaran. He has been pitted against RLSP candidate Brajesh Kushwaha from the seat. In 2014 he had  defeated JD(U) nominee Prakash Jha by a margin of over one Lakh votes. He had secured 3,71,232 votes while Mr Jha got 2,60,978 votes.

“A speech instigated the violence in West Champaran but police intervened and controlled the mob,” Bihar Chief Electoral Officer H.R. Srinivas said.

In another incident, a polling officer in Sheohar constituency sustained a serious bullet injury.

Stakes are high for the BJP-led NDA in this phase as it was aiming to retain all the eight seats it had won in the previous Lok Sabha elections.

In Siwan, both NDA and grand alliance as wives of two dreaded gangsters tur-ned politician — Hina Shahab and Kavita Singh we-re locked in a fierce battle.

Ms Shahab who was fielded by the RJD is the wife of four-time MP and criminal turned politician Mohammad Shahabuddin while the JD(U) gave the ticket to Ms Singh, a sitting MLA and wife dreaded gangster Ajay Singh.
