Lucknow: As the controversies over Ram temple and triple talaq gain momentum, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has decided to meet on these issues later this week. The executive meeting of the board will be held at Nadwatul Ulama in Lucknow from April 15 to 16.

AIMPLB member Maulana Khalid Rashid Farangi Mahali said that the board would discuss the Ayodhya dispute against the backdrop of the Supreme Court’s suggestion for an out-of-the-court settlement as well as triple talaq. He said that the matter of the Babri mosque was crucial and discussions would be held on whether there could be talks of any settlement.

The AIMPLB decision is significant since it comes after Shia cleric Maulana  Kalbe Sadiq asked the Shia community to give up their claim on the mosque in Ayodhya.

The meet will also discuss ways to highlight the board’s functions and activities through social media and strengthen its women’s wing. This will be the first time that the AIMPLB will discuss empowerment of women in its organisation and community.

The AIMPLB has been facing resentment from Muslim women over triple talaq and many of them have filed PILs in the Supreme Court challenging the provisions of triple talaq and ‘nikah halala’, terming these as regressive.

The board, however, opposed the PILs and also filed a counter-affidavit in the apex court, defending Muslim Personal Laws and triple talaq on the grounds that these were related to the Sharia laws.
