Why names in electoral roll not in Assam's NRC? SC asks EC

The EC needs to furnish details by March 28 by adding and deletion the names in the electoral roll.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday asked Election Commission (EC) to clarify on the action to be taken regarding the names reflecting in the electoral roll but not in the Assam NRC.

The SC further asked the EC to scrutinize the name updated between Jan 1, 2018, and Jan 1, 2019.

The EC needs to furnish details by March 28 by adding and deletion the names in the electoral roll.

This was in response to a petition that claimed lakhs of people in Assam won't be able to vote in the 2019 national elections since they aren't included in the draft NRC.

However, EC Tuesday told the Supreme Court that it hasn't and won't delete any names on the basis of the draft NRC.

In the second week of August 2018 BJP jolted India with the announcement of NRC's ( National Register of Citizens) updated list that put the fate of 40 lakh people on the stake.

The NRC draft, published by the government last year barred these mass from voting.

The final draft of NRC is yet to be published on July 31.

The NRC was revised to identify illegal migrants residing in India who entered during 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War.

Most of the population settled in Assam, West Bengal and other parts of North Eastern states'.

Assam will go to polls in three phases- April 11, 18 and 23.
