New Delhi: The Supreme Court has declined to interfere with the interim order of the National Green Tribunal appointing a panel to go into the issues of environmental compliance as well as the impact on inhabitants following the closure of the Sterlite plant at Thoothukudi.

A bench of Justices Rohinton Nariman and Indu Malhotra while dismissing the state’s appe-al asked the NGT to consider the question of maintainability of Ster-lite’s petition as well d-ecide the issue on merits after the committee submits its report.

Justice Nariman said, “Our August 17 order does not find a mention in the Au-gust 20 interim order passed by the tribunal.”
