Rahul Gandhi gets bail over all Modis thieves' jibe
Patna: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was on Saturday granted bail by a Patna court in connection with a defamation case filed by Bihar deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi for his remark “why all thieves have the surname Modi?” made during a rally in Karnataka on April 13.
Sushil Kumar Modi had filed the petition against Mr Gandhi on April 18 seeking “punishment for defaming people having the Modi surname”.
Additional chief judicial magistrate Kumar Gunjan granted bail to Mr Gandhi after the latter pleaded not guilty and decided to face trial, said a lawyer. The matter was posted for further hearing on August 8.
Before leaving the Bihar court premises, Mr Gandhi told reporters that he would continue to fight for the country’s poor.
“I am committed to fighting for the country’s poor, farmers and workers. I have come here to express my solidarity with them,” he said.
