New Delhi: The Congress on Monday launched a scathing attack on the BJP government accusing it of “criminal negligence” for the deaths of children in the BJP-ruled states of Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Communications chief of the Congress Randeep Singh Surjewala said, “Will the Prime Minister and the health ministry wake up from their slumber, the question is whether the Prime Minister would take decisive action against the governments and health ministers of UP and Jharkhand.” He further asked the Prime Minister to make a statement on the issue.

In the last one month the Congress has been attacking the BJP on the continued deaths of children in government hospitals. The Congress has also sought the resignation of the health ministers of Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand. Surjewala further added that is the constant increase in fatalities of children in BJP-ruled states has “completely decimated the health structure in the country and has exposed the BJP’s lacklustre attitude and criminal neglect.”

The Congress said that in Banswara, Rajasthan, 86 children had died in the last 53 days. A total of 236 children had died in Banswara this year. In Ranchi in BJP-ruled Jharkhand, 133 children had died in the last 28 days, and 164 children in Jamshedpur.

A total of 800 children had died so far according to the figures released by the Congress. The latest attack by the Congress comes in the wake of reported deaths of children from a government hospital in Farrukhabad in UP.

Officials in UP said on Monday that 49 infants died in a month in the Farrukhabad district hospital. Most of the deaths were caused by “perinatal asphyxia”, a condition in which a child has trouble breathing.

Continuing the attack Surjewala said, “Who is responsible for this utter negligence and criminal neglect of the health of our children? In Farrukhabad, children are stated to have died again on account of lack of oxygen and medication.” The Congress is going to take up the issue in the winter session of parliament too.
