UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav now wants the police force in the state to take some lessons in etiquette.
The chief minister wants the police to learn how to say “please” and “thank you”, and behave with the common man in a more polite manner.
“The chief minister has said that he wants to improve the image of the police force and this will be possible only if the cops learn how to behave properly with the people. We have decided to sensitise the police through workshops so that they can improve their behaviour,” said a senior police official. The official admitted that unduly harsh working conditions and lack of adequate rest, besides job compulsions, made most of the police on field duty irritable and short tempered.
He explained that due to shortage of police personnel, the police were required to work for almost 18 hours a day and that too without a weekly off. They also face rough behaviour from the affluent and the influential.
“All this adds to their mental pressure and causes frustration which finds an outlet in their interaction with the common man. We have held yoga and meditation session for the police but, often, the policemen do not even find time for this,” said the official.
The state government now plans to put the police in touch with behavioural experts so that they can learn the basic etiquettes. The government is also recruiting police on a large scale to overcome the shortage of staff. A senior official in the chief minister’s secretariat said that well behaved police would not only help improve the image of the police force but would also change the people’s perception of the law and order situation.
