Akhilesh Yadav vows to upgrade father’s college

His father Mulayam Singh Yadav was a student in this college and on Sunday, UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav was the chief guest at the same college at a function to celebrate its centenary.

The A.K. College, formerly known as Ahir College, in Shikohabad, Ferozabad, completed 100 years on Sunday and the chief minister struck an emotional note when he said that he was privileged to be in the college where his father was once a student.

The A.K. College (Adar-sh Krishna College), incidentally, is one of the oldest institutions in north India. It was set up in 1916 by Chaudhary Shyam Singh Yadav, great grandfather of former UP minister Ashok Yadav. Chaud-hary Shyam Singh Yadav also formed the All-India Yadav Mahasabha in 1912.

The CM promised to increase the facilities in the college, especially sports, and even assured university status for it.

“Thousands of students have studied here and we will do everything possible to upgrade this college to the university level,” he said.

Congratulating the staff and student on the completion of 100 years of the college, the chief minister said that the institution had given direction to the country through its students like Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Akhilesh listed the achievements of his government and said that his government had worked for all sections of society and had fulfilled all promises made it the election manifesto. He lashed out at the BJP and BSP for making tall claims, but not doing anything for the common man.

“The BSP used all the money to install statues of elephants in its regime and the elephants remain where they were. The BJP made tall claims, but not-hing has been translated into reality,” he said.

Meanwhile, talking to this correspondent on Sunday, Mr Ashok Yadav said that it was unfortunate that the chief minister did not utter a single word about the founders and the history of the institution and their contribution at the function. He also criticised suggestions made at the function that the trust should be taken over by Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav’s clan to ensure progress of the institution.

“The chief minister assured university status to the college even though it is beyond his purview. The institution was set up by my great grandfather, Chaudhary Shyam Singh Yadav, to ensure good education for weaker sections of society but the state government is betraying the cause for which the college had been set up,” he said.

Mr Ashok Yadav, who was dismissed from the state Cabinet by the then chief minister Rajnath Singh in 2001 for opposing the quota within quota proposal, said he would continue his fight against the BJP and SP on the same issue.

“The BJP is all set to revive the quota within quota issue which was stalled by the Supreme Court in 2001, but the Akhilesh government remains unconcerned about the issue. I will again oppose the issue and this time I have the support of other OBC leaders too,” he added.
