Perturbed by reports of his plummeting popularity, UP CM Akhilesh Yadav will now start touring various districts across the state to get first-hand information about the pace of development at the ground level. According to sources, the chief minister has decided to visit districts on the pretext of attending functions and will then take a detour to meet the common people and visit villages without prior information. This will enable him to get a first-hand account of the ground situation. “In the past 18 months, the chief minister had been relying mainly on the bureaucrats to get a feedback but now he has started realising that the development has not percolated down to the grassroots level and that he is being misled to an extent. The Samajwadi leadership has advised him to proceed on a reality check himself and then make an assessment of the situation,” said a close aide of the CM. The initiative is also an attempt to neutralise the adverse publicity that the state government has been receiving, firstly, over the suspension of IAS officer Durga Shakti Nagpal and then the Muzaffarnagar riots.
