AIR to focus on Baloch abuses

After PM Narendra Modi’s mention of Balochistan — during his Independence day speech — public broadcaster All-India Radio is planning to focus on its news service in Baluchi language. It is learnt that the duration of the present news bulletins is 10 minutes, which could be increased.

It is understood that this coverage is likely to focus on the human rights violations of the local Baluchi population being done by the Pakistani Army. The telecast is also expected to draw heavily from the local language, culture and aspirations of the region. Sources stated that while AIR has a service in Baluchi, which commenced in 1974, the broadcaster is now looking to augment the news bulletin component.

“The All-India Radio (AIR) already has a service in Baluchi language which airs various programmes and also news. But now an enhanced news bulletin is being planned in Baluchi language,” sources said.

The move is significant as it comes in the backdrop of Modi’s Independence Day speech in which he had brought up the issue of Pakistani atrocities on people of Baluchistan and PoK.

Interestingly, public broadcaster Doordarshan had also telecast a world exclusive interview of the Baloch Republican Party chief Nawab Brahamdagh Bugti on August 27. DD News had sent a team to Geneva to interview him.

The External Services Division (ESD) of All India Radio broadcasts daily in 57 transmissions covering over 108 countries in 27 languages. Out of these, 15 are foreign, including Baluchi language.
