Adhir urges Left to take back Jangipur candidate

In the presence of party vice-president Rahul Gandhi, West Bengal Congress president Adhir Chowdhury on Monday publicly urged the CPI(M) to withdraw Left candidate Somnath Sinha Roy from Jangipur Assembly seat in Murshidabad in favour of senior Congress leader Mohammad Sohrab. Mr Sohrab was also the Congress Legislature Party leader in the outgoing state Assembly.
As a quid pro quo, Mr Chowdhury said the Congress would withdraw its candidate from Krishnagunj in Nadia. It may be noted that despite frantic efforts, the Congress and the Left Front failed to reach a consensus on 10 Assembly seats in Murshidabad.
Mr Chowdhury complained that the Congress had wanted Sagardighi in exchange for Bhagwangola which was given to the CPI(M). But the latter, he alleged, fielded a candidate in Sagardighi also.
The CPI(M), on the other hand, pointed out said Mr Chowdhury had arbitrarily fielded candidate in Domkal against their veteran former minister Anisur Rahman and in Hariharpara against sitting MLA Insar Ali. The Congress also fielded a candidate against sitting RSP MLA in Bharatpur.
