A 23-year-old Russian woman sustained severe injuries after the grandson of her landlord allegedly threw acid on her on Friday morning in Varanasi. The victim has been admitted to the trauma centre at the Banaras Hindu University and was in a “critical but stable condition.” According to police reports, the victim was staying as a paying guest in the house of Mr Hriday Lal Srivastava, located in Nand Nagar colony.

She had stayed at the same house for three months during a previous visit and became friends with the landlord’s grandson Siddhartha Srivastava.

The Russian citizen said she wanted to go back to Russia as her visa had expired and this allegedly angered Siddhartha, who threw acid on her while she was sleeping in the balcony of her third-floor room, around 4 am on Friday. The police have detained the elder brother of the accused and a hunt is on for Siddhartha.

ADG (Law and order) Dalijit Chaudhary said in Lucknow that a case has been registered and strict action will be taken in the matter. Chief minister Akhilesh Yadav has ordered free treatment of the victim and has asked the police to provide adequate security to the victim. The Russian embassy in Delhi has been informed about the incident, sources said.
