There has been a 45 per cent increase in the number of gymnasiums and yoga studios in Lucknow in recent months.
A survey carried out by ASSOCHAM shows a rise of up to 45 per cent in number of yoga practitioners, the majority of them being women.
D.S. Rawat, secretary-general of ASSOCHAM, while releasing the findings of the survey said, “Yoga has grown in India from an ancient spiritual practice to a big business and premium lifestyle, considering that there are an estimated four crore yoga practitioners across the country spending about '1,000 crore on designer yoga-wear, mats, towels and luxury retreats, thereby promoting the fitness industry.”
Mr Rawat said that one of the key reasons for the increased popularity of yoga is that it has developed as a solution for the ailments of modern society — technology overload, disconnection with the self, as well as alienation, insomnia, stress and anxiety. Additional benefits of practicing yoga, like improved digestion and concentration, together with lesser fatigue has helped people in many ways, including in performing better at work.
“The sudden boom of interest in yoga will fuel the demand for getting more trained yoga instructors, yoga studios and gymnasiums across India in the coming future,” he said.
ASSOCHAM representatives interacted with 100 gym trainers/fitness professionals and about 1,000 people sweating it out at gymnasiums across key cities for the survey. The survey was conducted during the course of past two months.
