Two Maoists were on Thursday killed in an exchange of fire with the joint security forces, comprising of the Orissa police and CRPF, in the ongoing combing operation in Chandiposh forest near Rourkela. One of the rebels was identified as Sangram, the platoon commander of the Sardanda division of the Maoists. According to state director-general of police K.B. Singh, around 30 rebels, belonging to Anmol camp, were camping in the Daldali hills. Anmol is the zonal head of Maoists in Sambalpur, Bargarh, Kuchinda, Deogarh areas. Acting on reliable intelligence inputs, the police and CRPF personnel launched an attack on the early hours on Wednesday which led to a fierce encounter between both the sides. “The operation was conducted by 3 units of Special Operation Group, one unit of CRPF and District Voluntary Force. Two Maoists were killed, one a top-ranking Naxal named Sangram, 35, possessing substantial arms and ammunition, including four rifles, 284 rounds of bullets, four grenades, Maoist literature and camping materials,” Mr Singh said.

The rebels were planning to launch attacks during the forthcoming Jharkand panchayat elections, the D-G added.
