At a time when the Modi government is focusing on improving air-connectivity to smaller towns, two of the four towns/cities that will fall off the air-connectivity map shortly are in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home-state of Gujarat. These are Bhavnagar and Porbandar in Gujarat along with Nanded in Maharashtra and surprisingly even Mysore city in Karnataka. DGCA sources said very few flights were in any case operating to these towns/cities and that even these flights would be discontinued soon by the respective airlines on commercial considerations in this year’s forthcoming summer schedule that will come into effect by the end of this month. DGCA sources said that only one airline each was operating to the four towns/cities and that it was purely a commercial decision of the concerned airline. There are indications that lack of viability or profitability was the reason why the flights to these four places are being discontinued. While three of the four places are towns, the fact that Mysore city too figures in the list has surprised many. But sources said one reason could be the excellent road connectivity between Bengaluru and Mysore.

The development is all the more surprising, considering that this year’s Summer schedule will see a rather steep 18.6 percent hike in flight departures from 12,533 to 14,869, meaning that airlines will be operating more flights between various destinations.
