: At least 19 people were killed and several others injured in a stampede that broke out on Rajghat bridge, which lies between Varanasi and Chandauli on Saturday.
Chaos had broken out at the spot where hundreds had arrived to pay tribute to a spiritual leader called Baba Jai Gurudev.
The district magistrate of Chandauli had confirmed the death toll. Ambulances were rushed to the spot of the tragedy to rescue those injured.
Quick to respond to the incident, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav announced Rs 2 lakhs each for kin of those killed in the stampede. The UP government also announced Rs 50,000 each for those critically injured.
