Nearly 100 students on Saturday fell ill after taking an overdose of iron syrup in a government school in Chhattisgarh’s Raipur district, officials said. The condition of 40 of them was stated to be critical. Hundred students, some of them girls, complained of nausea and stomach ache after consuming iron syrup in a government school in Keshdol, nearly 50 km from here, after which they were rushed to the nearby Sarsiba community health centre, a district official here said. He however said the district authorities here were yet to receive detail report on the incident. A preliminary investigation by the local administration suggested that a health worker who was assigned the responsibility of providing iron syrup to the children as part of a government scheme, had administered some extra doses to some middle-school students. A probe is on into the incident, the official said, unwilling to be named.
