Taking doodles to the next level

Be it among commercial artists or Instagram artists, doodle art has a universal appeal.

Be it among commercial artists or Instagram artists, doodle art has a universal appeal. When digital artist Dipali Meher turned to this art-form to go back to her roots — the humble pen and pencil — she took it a step further and turned to pen-and-ink art. This art form makes use of paintbrushes and ink to create free flowing forms before giving them a defined shape using pens. The entire work is done using black ink. Having experimented with the medium to create two-feet and three-feet high paintings, Dipali is now set to share her techniques with a Culture Caravan workshop on August 6.

“I will begin the workshop by giving the participants cards with blobs of ink and asking them to imagine what they could be,” Dipali explains. “After that, we will move on to brush strokes and finally I will show them how to use the pen to give it some form.” Dipali also emphasises on the use of black ink as the focus is more on forms and shapes than on clashing colours in her artwork.

The workshop is a part of a series of Culture Caravan art workshops that take place each month at different locations. “We have done several workshops on charcoal art and art without brushes,” says organiser Ruchika Agarwal D’Souza of Pointy Zebra. “It is all about teaching people the alternative and interesting forms of art.”

The pen and ink workshop will take place on August 6, 11 am onwards, at Dolally Taproom, Republic Mall, Off New Link Road, Andheri West
