The singer, who was coached by Paloma Faith, did not appear on the live quarter finals on Saturday night. Hours before, the BBC blamed the departure on “personal reasons which have only just come to light”.

But speaking to the Mirror, the 26-year-old musician, who was a favourite to win the competition, revealed that she has been struggling with drug addiction for two years.

Beth said, “I am sorry. I am an addict. I have let everybody down on the show. Two years ago I realised that I had a problem with drugs. I was using them to cope up with various issues in my life.”

The newspaper also claimed the musician of “used cocaine during rehearsals” but said this was not done on BBC premises.
