ONGC booked a final berth as they defeated Indian Oil 4-1 in the penalty shootout after the match ended 2-2 in regulation time in the semi-final of the 26th Lal Bahadur Shastri hockey tournament at the Shivaji Stadium in the capital on Saturday.

ONGC will meet Indian Railway on Sunday, who beat Air India 3-2 in the penalty shootout as the match ended 2-2 in regulation time.

The match was poised in the initial stage as Diwakar Ram opened the scoring for ONGC in the seventh minute. Indian Oil’s Roshan Minz posted the equaliser in the 37th minute as the first half ended 1-1.

The Oilmen went ahead in the 56th minute, courtesy a brilliant reverse shot by Prabhjot Singh. ONGC though took just four minute to level the scores after Diwakar converted a penalty corner, stretching the match to the shootout. ONGC reigned supreme in the shootout after Sumit, Sumit Kumar, Gurjant Singh and Vikramjit Singh struck on penalties.

For Indian Oil, Gurjinder Singh and Guna Sekhar missed the penalty while Vikash Kumar was the only one to find the target. Diwakar was declared the man of the match.

In the second semi-final, Indian Railway’s Umesh Kumar drew the first blood in the ninth minute before Sheshe Gowda (11th) equalised for Air India.

Both teams pressed hard to score but the Airmen went ahead in the 55th minute through Armaan Quershi. Their joy was shortlived as Simrandeep Singh converted a penalty corner within 10 minutes to force the game on penalties. In the shootout, Simrandeep Singh, Sanjay Kumar Bir and Sandeep Kumar Singh sounded the board for the railmen while A.B. Cheeyanna, Arjun Halappa and Joga Singh missed out for Air India, while Sheshe Gowda and Bishan Singh scored. Simrandeep was named the man of the match.
