Refuting any romantic relationship with the UK based girl who has filed a sexual harassment complaint with the Punjab Police, India hockey captain Sardar Singh on Thursday said that they were “good friends” and all the allegations by Ashpal Bhogal were “completely baseless”.
Addressing the media here at the Sector 42 hockey stadium here, Sardar said, “We were good friends. There was no romantic relationship. I still respect the woman and I am hurt by the words she has used against me. There was not much talk between our parents.
“I agree that she went to my home. We met before the London Olympics through Facebook and then we have not met for the last one year. All these allegations are false. And the way she used the words, it not in our culture,” said Sardar here on the day.
“Even I can go into details but I will not. I still respect her and know my limits. I represent my country and a lot of youngsters believe in us and admire us. Hockey comes even before my family for me. Whatever the investigation will be, we will see.”
The 29-year-old said that he was not in touch with the UK-based girl for the last two years and the allegation regarding rape and getting a child aborted were false.
Sardar, in fact, accused the girl of misusing her social media profiles.
“All my social network profiles last time I was playing in Spain... she had my email ids and all. My friends also used it before. She took my passwords from them. She used to tweet and retweet. I did not have it. She even posted on her own that we are getting married. At that time, I was playing in Spain and even informed the coaches about this issue. I will only say my focus is on hockey and please let me play. Whatever happens, I will update,” he said.
Sardar added that he had also informed chief coach Roelant Oltmans about the issue. “We were friends and she used to come for tournaments. I did not meet her during the London Olympics. We met before that. There was no ring ceremony. I know that I have not abused her. I informed my coaches and even Hockey India. All these incidents of my reporting her presence was known to the coaches,” added Sardar, who is a DSP with Haryana police.
