Uttar Pradesh Wizards came up with a clinical show, stunning Delhi Waveriders 6-4 in a thrilling round-robin match of the fourth Hockey India League at the Shivaji Stadium, here on Monday.
The Wizards went ahead through V.R. Raghunath’s (19th minute) penalty corner conversion and a late onslaught — two field goals in quick succession from Chinglensana Singh (54th) and Australia’s Jamie Dwyer (55th) and another from a set piece by Gonzalo Peillat (58th) — helped them notch up a second win in the tournament.
The Waveriders will next play Jaypee Punjab Warriors here, while UP will travel to Chandigarh also to face Punjab Warriors on February 4.
After the early set back, Delhi fought back hard and the game came alive in the final quarter when field goals from Justin Reid-Ross (55th) and Talwinder Singh (58th) helped them reduce the margin, but it was not enough for them to evade defeat in their first home match.
