Punjab National Bank and Punjab & Sind Bank will meet in the final of the 52nd Nehru senior men’s hockey tournament.

In Tuesday’s semi-finals at the Shivaji Stadium, both teams put up a gritty display to outplay their opponents via penalty shootouts.

The game between PNB and Indian Railways was a hard-fought affair, with the former prevailing 4-2 (3-3).

In fact, the Railwaymen had the edge in regulation time and were ahead 3-1 before a late charge — Sumit Toppo striking twice in four minutes — from PNB saw them draw level in the 69th minute, forcing the game to penalties.

In the shootout, PNB were dominant with Gagandeep Singh, Hardeep Singh, Ranjeet Singh and Shivdeep finding the target. For Railways, Affan Yousuf and Sandeep Singh missed, while Victor Minz and Gurpreet Singh converted.

In the other last-four encounter, skipper Sarvanjit Singh inspired PSB to a 3-1 (2-2) victory over Oil & Natural Gas Corporation.

PSB took a 2-0 lead with Sukhjit Singh and Sarvanjit finding the net, while ONGC’s reply came from Gurvinder Singh Chandi and Tyron Perreira.

In the penalty shootout, ONGC were no match for their opponents and missed three of their four chances. Jagwant Singh put them ahead 1-0, while Bikas Toppo, Diwakar Ram and Harsahib Singh were off target.

PSB converted all their chances through Karamjit Singh, Sarvanjit and Parvinder Singh.

The final will be played at Shivaji Stadium at 3 pm on Wednesday.
