Air India and Indian Railway won their respective league matches in the 26th Lal Bahadur Shastri hockey tournament at the Shivaji Stadium in the capital on Wednesday.

The star-studded Air India team overcame defending champions Punjab National Bank 3-1, while the railmen rode on a brace from Ajit Pandey to thrash Punjab and Sind Bank 5-1.

In the first game of the day, former India strikr Shivendra Singh put Air India ahead in the 21st minute before veteran Arjun Halappa doubled the score in the 50th minute.

Nitesh Kiro further widened the gap scoring through a penalty corner nine minutes later. PNB finally managed to convert one of their chances in the 64th minute through Pardeep Mor but it was too little too late.

In the other game, Indian Railway were quick off the blocks taking the lead in the sixth minute, with Simrandeep Singh scoring off a penalty corner.

Raju Pal and Pandey scored back-to-back goals to put the team 3-0 up in the span of five minutes, before the latter completed his double just before the lemon break.

The second half saw some resistance from the bankmen as they tried to make inroads but it wasn’t enough.

Kush J.P. inflicted more misery on PNB scoring the fifth goal in the game.

Prabhdeep Singh managed a consolation goal for the Bankmen in the 64th minute.
