Too old to play abroad: Lyngdoh

Freshly crowned Indian football “player of the year” Eugeneson Lyngdoh does not fancy playing abroad as he considers himself too old for a stint in foreign leagues.

At 29, the Bengaluru FC midfielder has realistic aspirations and feels the time has passed for him to follow in the footsteps of national teammate and goalkeeper Gurpreet Sandhu who plays for Stabaek in Norway.

“Gurpreet is at a good age to play abroad, as for me I am quite old,” says Lyngdoh. “Going abroad is not ideal but if I was younger I would’ve loved a chance,” he said.

The former Shillong Lajong central midfielder who had a two year contract extension with Bengaluru that he joined in July 2014 on a 1-year deal, looks back at his time in lower divisions with content. “I was busy with my studies, which I didn’t even complete (laughs). But I have no regrets.”

Lyngdoh has been a late bloomer but has made the most of his four seasons in the top flight. He says the ISL experience with FC Pune City teammate Didier Zokora, has made him better.

“What I have learned from Zokora is that football is not only about your technique, it is about how you read the game and be one step ahead,” Lyngdoh said.
