Just when it was becoming apparent that this year’s January transfer window in the Premier League was not making much noise, Manchester City did a rescue act on the deadline day by signing Pep Guardiola as their new manager from next season. A man of proven record with Barcelona and Bayern Munich, Guardiola will replace Manuel Pellegrini. While City fans have the right to be excited, they shouldn’t forget to show gratitude to Pellegrini.

When Pellegrini joined City in 2014, a section of media and fans were not entirely convinced by his credentials. But after two and a half seasons, the Chilean has not only proved his detractors wrong but also made sure his name would be counted among the top contemporary managers.

Pellegrini won the Premier League and League Cup titles in his debut year with the club. An achievement that shouldn’t be overlooked, considering his previous lack of experience in England. Yes, he inherited a settled squad with many talented names but it also required good man-management skills to make them gel as a unit. He was a master tactician and his pragmatic approach succeeded in getting the best out of his players.

The 62-year-old also got tremendous backing from the club. The modern world of football has become much more result-oriented and managers are bound to feel insecure about their job. But Manchester City not only offered a contract extension to Pellegrini after a year of no titles but also kept him on the loop about the Guardiola development. Pellegrini was told about a week in advance about the possibility of Guardiola replacing him. It’s so rare these days that such an understanding exists between the club and manager.

Pellegrini is not yet done with winning more trophies with the club. Manchester City are still in the fray for four titles this season, more than anyone in the EPL. Leicester City, Spurs and Arsenal are giving them tough competition in the league but City have the potential to go all the way. It was Pellegrini’s men who snatched the title away from Liverpool two years ago on the final day of the season.

Pellegrini’s last match at Etihad Stadium is against Arsenal and City faithful should leave no stone unturned to give the man his due. The news of his departure may also act as a wake-up call to players, who will now look to send off their manager on a high.
