Marshmallow colours are a great way to bridge the gap between summer and autumn so embrace the season’s go-to colour palette

Marshmallow colours: baby blues, candy-floss pinks, spring chick yellows and almond greens made a welcome change from the more intense colours of fall/winter, marking a definite move towards pastels and acid bonbon shades at recently concluded international runways. Our Indian designers too are giving their thumbs-up to this beautiful trend that speaks volumes about the season’s colour story.

Ankur and Priyanka Modi of AM:PM share, “We are used to believe that innocent pastel shades or marshmallow hues are only meant for the warmer months but that’s not true. They are not just for the girly girls or reserved for Easter brunches anymore. From sporty and edgy to peppy and glam, these delicate hues work on every style and silhouette.”

Designer Pallavi Mohan agrees and shares, “Marshmallow colours are a great way to bridge the gap between summer and autumn — a gentler alternative to going straight into the back-to-school colours of black, grey, burgundy and navy. The colours effortlessly combine minimalism, indelible grace and sophistication in an almost ethereal, dream like sequence. There are a variety of ways to incorporate these colours into one’s wardrobe. It can be done subtly in the form of understated patterns, abstract prints and embroideries or the colours can easily be worn as quilted sweaters, blazers, jackets and skirts. For a bolder look, they can be paired with big prints or colour-blocking. One can also go for dramatic pieces such as oversized fur coats or exaggerated silhouettes in these cooler colours for a statement outfit. This season animal fur has become quite popular and I think that it is warm and luxurious at the same time. Hence, you can also go for candy coloured outerwears. Along with that, slouchy, boyish silho uettes are quite in vogue. So opt for tailored suits and cool sweatshirts. To play the candy colours down, one can also juxtapose it with digital prints which are in vogue. However, the season is all about minimalism and the colours are reflective of that. Hence, in my opinion, the best way to flaunt this trend is to keep it simple. Being fussy can easily lead one to look like a candy. Choosing sophisticated and age-appropriate pieces is a must to avoid to look like a little girl.”

If you want to candy-fy yourself, there are a few points to be kept in mind says designer Ridhi Arora. “Think monochrome: choose one colour and stick with it throughout your outfit. Mix pastels: pair a few different pastel colours together for a soft yet bold look. Neutrals: make your pastel piece pop by keeping the rest of your colour palette simple. Brights: add a little edge to the softness of the pastel with bright, fun accessories,” she says.

As for fabrics and silhouettes, designer Gautam Gupta advises, “You can go for velvets, leathers, linens, furs, wools, silks, tweed and tactile fabrics. All these fabrics would look beautiful in marshmallow colours. If you are a guy who would like to stand out, then get started on with this trend as you can flaunt it easily without sacrificing your macho-ness. Pair the pastel colour with bold prints, nautical stripes or go for darker tone denims with pastel t-shirts, etc. Just don’t go with bold metallic studs and rivets. Pinks are no longer a shade just for girls anyway and also baby blue, lavender and other pastel tones are the go-to palette.”
