Documenting tales in notes

Telling stories is the call for musician Gowri Jayakumar. As an artiste, she finds it hard to live without expressing whatever that catches her attention.

“Telling stories is essential for my existence. It could be my story or anyone else’s, but I feel something needs to be documented and I do it best through music,” says Gowri . Based out of Pune.

She will be performing her own songs written over a period of five years. “Some of the newer songs are Octopus Mother (the Octopus is a recurring motif that I look up to and look for guidance in my subconscious), Ego Trippin’ (I like to think I’m confronting my ego in this piece — a little tete-a-tete with myself), Water Lily (a song I wrote in Goa two years ago, where I am awestruck by the beauty born out of murky muddy depths), and a bunch of songs like these. For me, it is experience that often serves as my best stimulus for composition, as analysis. To perceive experience from a detached and aerial point of view helps,” shares Gowri.

Though settled in Pune, Gowri was born in Thiruvananthapuram. “But my association with my home has been infrequent. It was not as musical as I’d liked it to be. Then two years ago, I came with my band Run Pussy Run to perform at Kappa TV’s Music Mojo. I am what you could call a fledgling travelling musician, and I hope to build on that with new lands, new experiences and new songs,” says Gowri.

She signs off by saying that she is excited to perform in Kochi. “I really respect and fully support Sumesh Lal’s efforts in constructing and developing this pure Indie music culture in Kerala. I don’t know how much of a struggle it is. I am very excited to be back and I hope this sustains, these platforms expand and become a force to reckon within the music industry.”
