Android Excellence session in Google Play Store has a special collection of apps and games.
Close on the heels of Apple announcing a rejig of many of its products at the worldwide developers conference (WWDC) held recently, Google has made some significant changes to its Play Store. The app shop now has an Android Excellence section, telling users not to look elsewhere to find the best of the apps and games.
There is more editorial involvement at play, with the launch of the Android Excellence programme. The purpose of the development, as Techcrunch puts it, is to “highlight the sort of apps Google wants developers to build for its own mobile platform.” Categorised into apps and games, these would appear in the Editor’s Choice section of the Play Store. Sixteen excellent apps and games each are currently on display at the store, figuring familiar and non-familiar names.
Going by the reports, it is less likely to bring much cheer from the users end – the collections get refreshed only quarterly! The collection could reek of staleness after a while unless the makers update periodically. Developers, on the other hand, can attract users for a longer period of time though. Verge brings out another point. “There are no descriptions to explain why editors select apps for Android Excellence, the way they do for other Google Play categories, like ‘5 Travel Apps for Your Next Adventure’.”
For Apple’s revamp too, the biggest pie went to App Store, the app centre, which maintained a uniform design since its launch nine years ago. Apple has got three different tabs: Today, Apps, and Games. Today, the homepage of the app, brings out what’s new in the app market. Apps tab shows the other apps in store and the remaining one tells what all games are out there.
The favourite apps of Google have more rewards, writes Techcrunch: “Besides its Editor’s Choice Page and its app recommendations, Google also continues to host its Google Play Awards at its I/O developer conference to select top apps and games across a number of categories, like ‘standout indie,’ ‘standout startup,’ ‘best Android Wear,’ ‘Best VR experience’ and more.”
