Camps exist in B-town: Ranvir Shorey

Actor Ranvir Shorey is an exuberant performer who has proved his mettle with films like Khosla Ka Ghosla, Traffic Signal, Bheja Fry and the critical and commercial hit Mithya. However, his last film Sonchiriya flopped miserably at the box office.

Although the onus for its failure was put on the language, Shorey disagrees. “I don’t think the language was so tough that people could not understand it,” he says and adds, “I have started feeling that whatever critics like, the audience doesn’t (smiles). Secondly, the mood of the people wasn’t suitable to watch this film... probably, they were looking for some light kind of story. Also, I feel the marketing of the film wasn’t done aptly.”

Coming back to the language of the film, he says, “When I read the script, I could easily get the grammar. Yes, certain words are slightly out of the way but I feel those know Hindi well could understand this language.”

The actor is now gearing up for his next film titled Loot-Case. “I am doing Rajesh Krishnan’s Loot-Case where I am playing a Maharashtrian police officer. The film has a very good ensemble including Kunal Khemu, Rasika Dugal and Vijay Raaz. It’s a comedy film. Rajesh Krishnan, as you all know, has that typical funny and quirky humour. The film should release this year.”

Despite being such a good actor, he is not seen in many movies. Does he approach filmmakers for work? “I do. But, unfortunately, there aren’t many filmmakers who know me… hardly 10 filmmakers know me and I do meet them socially. They know I exist but they do not call me for work. Anyway, it’s fine... I happily meet all of them.”

Recently, actress Neena Gupta had approached Karan Johar for work through social media, will he also make a similar approach? “I don’t think it works like that. Did she (Neena Gupta) finally did she get the part?” asks Shorey and adds, “I don’t think you can get work by putting your request on the social media… They have their relationships and they have their agendas.” So, does he think camps exist in Bollywood? “Yes, I think camps exist in this industry but I don’t belong to any camp. I am not the one who will like to get tied up to any particular camp.”

The actor is also working with well-known director Bejoy Nambiar. Sharing more about it, he says, “The title of this web-series is ‘Flip’. It is an interesting theme that Bejoy Nambiar has come up with. It is an anthology of four stories. Each one has an interesting concept. The stories will indeed excite you a lot. I am part of one story titled ‘Bully’ but I am at the other end. I am not playing the bully… actually, it is better to leave it unsaid. Let’s keep it for the viewers to watch and comment.”
