They might look like a thing from a child’s craft box but are one of the biggest trends of summer fashion. Pompoms! They are fun, lively and colourful and can turn any boring outfit into a trendy one. From handbags to summer hats and scarves to footwear, pompoms can jazz up almost anything. If you’ve ever wondered ways to style your boring white shirt and that chic LBD, pompoms are the way to go! And guess what, they are really easy on the pocket and easy to make.

Perhaps you thought that pompoms and fashion have nothing to do with one another? They can be used for anything from causal to dressy and styled, according to any occasion. However, the trick is to keep it minimal and not make yourself look like you just got out of a fur box!

Apart from being stylish, they are really easy to make and use. You can add them to almost any dress or accessory to give it a personalised look. Shalini Chopra, a fashion blogger at Stylish By Nature says, “Pompoms add a personal touch to your outfit. It can be worn and used in any form, like shoes, bags and sleeves.” According to her, the best way to style them is to use them1 in accessories like earrings and peep toes or tie up sandals. “I have personally added pompoms to my earrings, shoes and tops and they give a very colourful look.”

Poms look best on accessories when kept minimal, thus shifting the centre of focus to one aspect of the outfit. The best part about pompoms is that each one can style it their own way. Babita Jaishankar, image and fashion stylist says “It’s wonderful to see it being carried in different ways that suit one’s personality and style. I have carried it as a pendant on my chain.”

The pompom trends have been making rounds for the last couple of years and were mostly seen in jewellery, bags and Bohemian-inspired clothing. But the playful trend is back with a bang this spring and looks like is here to stay. Smita Roy, a fashion blogger at Sculls and Tulls says, “Pompoms are not just seen being used in accessories anymore, but shoes, flat or heeled, dresses and even the daintiest of things like key chains and phone covers. A simple dress or a pair of shoes embellished with poms makes the whole outfit look super flirty and fun.”
