Have you ever wondered where does the succulent galouti kebab get its name from Galouti is an adulteration of gahlawat, ‘melt in your mouth’. The story takes us to Lucknow, where an ageing Nawab Wajid Ali Shah had asked his chef to prepare something that would help him savour his passion for meat without chewing since he had lost his teeth. So when a galouti kebab melts in your mouth, you know whom you must be grateful to.

If you are the curious kind then Kebab Mein Haddi — A Group Kebab Trail in South Mumbai will take you to some of the best kebab joints around South Mumbai with Vishall Bansal, who identifies himself as a complete foodie. He will also share interesting stories and anecdotes about kebabs that every foodie must know.

Talking about his love for kebabs,Vishall says, “Kebabs are a burst of flavours and spices and they go well even with wine.”

The kebab trail will follow the inconspicuous shops handpicked by the guide himself. “People go to the famous joints to have a plate of kebab for says Rs 180, but I will take them to these completely rundown places where they will get them for Rs 50 and the taste is exceptional,” he says.

“The aim of the food tour is to give you an outstanding gastronomical experience through the back alleys of South Mumbai — through the places you didn’t know existed in Mumbai,” he explains.

Vishall, who comes from a vegetarian family, started to eat meat only in college due to “peer pressure.” “I used to weigh 150 kilos five years ago. And I would have three dinners — one at 7.30 pm which would be at home, the next would be at 10.30 pm when I would go out with friends to these kebab joints, and a final dinner at 1.30 am, where we would go hunting for Chinese and bhurji pav around the Mumbai Central area,” he adds.

Some of the dishes that the team will be indulging are Galouti (Gahlawat) kebabs, Dahi Ke Kebas, Mutton baida roti and much more.

As he promises a food adventure worth one’s time, Vishall chooses some of the must-go-to joints for every kebab lover, “Of course Ayub’s at Fort, Sarvi and Sigdi at Nagpara, Haji Tikka near Bohri Mohalla and Khurshid in Andheri.”
