The Swaraj Abhiyan, founded by Yogendra Yadav and lawyer-activist Prashant Bhushan after they were expelled from the Aam Aadmi Party, has short-listed two wards — Wazirpur and Vikas Nagar — but is yet to finalise where the outfit will support an Independent candidate.
The outfit has accused the AAP of bringing down its posters in Wazirpur. “Swaraj Abhiyan is not a political party yet. So we are not entering the fray, but we will back an Independent candidate,” a leader of the outfit said. “One of the reasons for not contesting the bypolls in all 13 wards is that the main MCD election will take place next year. So, the councillors will have less than eight months in office,” the leader said. The organisation will announce its plan to turn it into a political outfit on Thursday.
The organisation is currently conducting an electoral process on the lines of US primaries, under which candidates may come from within the area after being recommended by people. “We don’t want to focus on elections, but the process. We want to present a foolproof model, which can help weed out anomalies that take place in ticket distribution in different parties,” the leader said.
