A 37-year-old confectioner died of burn injuries after he fell into a cauldron of hot oil being used for sweetmeat preparations in Farsh Bazar area of east Delhi on Sunday evening. The victim, identified as Gunnu Giri, was a native of Amroha in Uttar Pradesh. He stayed with his wife Sundari Devi and four children in Shahdara’s Chhota Bazar locality and worked at Hira Lal Sweets.

According to the police, on Sunday evening at about 6 pm Gunnu was making famous sweet balu shahi when suddenly he fainted and fell into the cauldron of hot oil. “As soon as fell in, two other workers tried to pull him out, but they suffered burns as well,” said a senior police officer.

“Somehow Gunnu was taken out of the cauldron and rushed to the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital where he was declared dead by the doctors.” His body was handed over to his family members for last rites after the autopsy. It was learnt, the cops said, that Gunnu has been running high fever for the past couple of days but due to shortage of staff he had to come to make sweets. On Sunday, however, he suddenly lost consciousness and fell into the cauldron.
