A 37-year-old woman and her 16-year-old son were murdered by a male assailant in Palam, southwest Delhi district, on Tuesday.

The mother has been identified as Anju Devi (37) and her son as Prashant (16). Anju Devi’s husband, Raman Chaudhary, who has a computer repair shop in Nehru Place, was not at home when the murders took place at Raj Nagar-II in Palam.

Anju Devi succumbed to her injuries at a local hospital and her son Prashant was brought dead.

The incident was reported at 5 pm when the attacker, identified as Shyam Singh, a native of Madhubani district in Bihar, reached the victims’ residence. Singh, who lives in lives in Uttam Nagar with his family, first attacked on Prashant with a kitchen knife and when Anju Devi came to her son’s rescue, Singh also stabbed her in stomach with the knife. After hearing screams, Anju Devi’s neighbours rushed to rescue her and her son. However, Singh locked him in a room and tried to slit his throat.

After a PCR call, police team reached to the spot and took all of the wounded persons to the Maharaja Agrasen Hospital, where doctors declared Prashant was brought dead. Anju Devi succumbed to her injuries and the attacker, Shyam Singh, is undergoing treatment, but his condition is critical.

“We are clueless about exact reason behind the double murder. We will talk to victims’ family members to get a clue about the reason that instigated the double murder. A probe has been ordered in the case,” said a senior police officer.

“It is a suspected case of personal rivalry. The weapon used in the offence has been recovered from the spot. The accused apparently slit his own throat after locking himself inside a room,” the police officer said. A case of murder has been registered in connection with the incident, the police said.
