In a shocking incident, a woman allegedly strangled her three-year-old niece to death and stuffed her body inside a bedbox in their house in northeast Delhi’s Gokulpuri.
The accused, 24-year-old Roshan Jahan, was arrested on Wednesday night after a foul smell emanating from the bed in her house at Mustafabad in Gokulpuri led her family members to open the bedbox only to find the body of three-year-old Ashna.
The baby girl had been reported missing on Tuesday, May 17, and the police was investigating the matter, suspecting it to be a case of kidnapping.
The accused, mother of a six-month-old baby, was allegedly unhappy because of occasional light banter between her husband and his sister-in-law Firdaus, and was depressed over it. The two sisters-in-law also had a heated argument a day before the three-year-old girl went “missing,” the police said. On Tuesday, Ashna was alone in the house with Roshan Jahan, who allegedly strangled her niece and hid her body in a bedbox. When the family members, including Firdaus, returned and asked about the girl, Roshan Jahan told them that she had sent her to buy candy she was asking for, but she had not returned home.
The police suspected her statement since investigation and examination of CCTV footage in the area led to conclusion that the girl had not left her house at the time when the accused had claimed to have sent her for buying candy. Despite this. the police continued searching for the girl, considering it to be a case of kidnapping.
“We formed 20 police teams to search for the girl, but she was found nowhere after examining CCTV footage of the locality. A police team went to the girl’s house to talk to her parents. A foul smell emanating from Roshan Jahan’s room raised suspicion. When the police team tried to check the room, Roshan claimed that the foul smell was caused by the presence of a dead rat inside the cooler,” said a senior police officer.
“A police team thoroughly checked the house to verify the source of foul smell and the body of the girl was found inside bedbox of Roshan Jahan’s room,” added the officer.
However, after the girl’s body was found, the accused was put through sustained interrogation during which she admitted murdering her niece.
