An elderly woman allegedly attempted suicide by jumping in front of a Metro train at Central Delhi's Chandni Chowk Metro station on Wednesday.

The police said that the incident took place at around 12:15 pm on Wednesday, following which the woman, identified as Amarjeet Kaur (60), was rushed to a hospital.

“She was rushed to Aruna Asaf Ali hospital from where she was referred to Sushruta Trauma Centre where she had to undergo surgery and the entire portion below the knee of her left leg had to be amputated,” said Jitender Mani, deputy commissioner of police (Metro).

According to the police, the senior citizen took the extreme step due to some financial problems which she and her son Inderdeep were facing after the death of her husband.

Running a shop in Chandni Chowk, Amarjeet’s son had incurred heavy losses. She had mentioned this in the suicide note which was recovered from her possession.

In the CCTV footage of the Chandni Chowk Metro station, Kaur is last seen standing on the platform apparently waiting for a train towards HUDA City Centre on the Yellow Line.

Kaur, whose husband passed away years ago, lives with her son Inderdeep Singh at West Delhi’s Kirti Nagar area.
