Incessant rains led to waterlogging in several areas in Delhi on Friday. Cars moved bumper to bumper in the areas like ISBT Kashmere Gate, Sarai Kale Khan, Moolchand, AIIMS, Lajpat Nagar, Savitri Cinema and IIT.
Waterlogging disrupted the traffic movement on the Ring Road, Outer Ring Road, Mathura Road and Aurobindo Marg. The traffic snarls escalated during the evening peak hours.
Safdarjung observatory, reading of which is considered the official figure for the capital, recorded 29.6mm rainfall while the reading at Palam observatory was 0.8mm. According to the met department, heavy rains are expected on Saturday evening.
Waterlogging on several traffic intersections and underpasses caused a lot of hardship to commuters. While cars were stuck on the waterlogged AIIMS flyover, the potholes-filled stretch between Sarai Kale Khan and Barapullah elevated road slowed down the traffic. In one of its traffic updates on Twitter, the Delhi traffic police said: “Water logging on Durga Puri Chowk, Prem Bari Pul to WazirPur Depot, Lohan Mandi Narayana, AIIMS to Lajpat Nagar, GGR Flyover to Dhaula Kuan.” Because of waterlogging, the traffic police also issued an advisory asking public to avoid M. B. Road from Khanpur to Mehrauli. Earlier, the Delhi government had announced a 24X7 helpline number – 1077 for inviting public complaints of waterlogging. The government has also roped in help of the Delhi traffic police to identify spots prone to waterlogging. Gurgaon also reeled under waterlogging woes. “Usual Friday evening heavy traffic in Gurgaon...Rain also making the movement slow...All hands at work right now,” Gurgaon police tweeted.
With wet spell continuing on Friday, the maximum temperature was recorded at 33 degree Celsius, one notch below normal. The minimum temperature settled at 26.2 degrees Celsius, one notch below normal.
The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover around 36 and 25 C respectively.
