A criminal wanted by the Delhi police in over 50 cases and carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh was on Sunday morning arrested two police personnel from the force’s east district after a brief encounter that involved firing from both sides.
The criminal, Amit Kumar alias Sanju, was involved in 50 cases including those of murder and firing on a police team.
The two police personnel were wearing bulletproof jackets that saved them from bullets fired at them by Sanju, claimed the cops.
In a briefing about the operation that led to Sanju’s arrest, deputy commissioner of police (east) Rishi Pal said sub-inspector Rajender Kumar and head constable Sukhbir Singh had received a tip off about the criminal’s movements in the area. The two officers, from the anti-auto theft squad of the east district, went to Pandav Nagar and laid a trap to arrest the criminal.
“Sanju was spotted by the two cops riding a Scooty. Once the informer identified him, the police team told him to stop. He tried to speed away, but was chased by the cops. The police officers apprehended him near an underpass close to Mangalam Hospital red light. He lost his balance after being hit by the vehicle of the police party,” said Mr Pal.
Even after falling from the Scooty, Sanju refused to give up and surrender and instead took out his weapon and started running away.
“He was asked to stop and surrender by the police team, but he started firing at them. He fired a total of four rounds and one round each hit the bulletproof jackets of sub-inspector Rajender Kumar and head constable Sukhbir Singh. The police party also fired in self-defence and a total of three rounds were fired by the two policemen. However, none of the bullets fired by the police during this exchange of fire, hit anyone,” said Mr Pal.
On Sanju’s previous cases, Mr Pal said the most recent major incident for which he was wanted by the police was the murder of a rival gang member, Sonu alias Chikna, in October. While Sanju, he said, is an active member of Satprakash, alias Satte, gang of Nand Nagri, Sonu worked for one of Satte’s rivals.
Last year, Sanju had fired at a police party chasing him during investigation of a robbery case filed in the Krishna Nagar police station. On that occasion, his accomplice Deepak Jhanji was arrested, but Sanju had managed to escape, said Mr Pal.
