Uri aftermath: Cops review VIP security

In the aftermath of the Uri attack and intelligence inputs of a terror threat to the national capital, the Delhi police is carrying out a review of the security measures in place for VIPs and at places that see high footfall.

With people soaked in Navratri spirit, the Delhi police has made tight security arrangements in the walled city which is home to some of the oldest Ramlila celebrations. In comparison to last year, extra reserve police force has been deployed at all places that see high footfall till Diwali.

The security audit involves plugging loopholes, if any, in the current security cover being provided to the protectees, mock drills and regular briefings of officers.

“Currently, we have finished the security audit of Z+ and Z protectees. We have initiated the security audit of Y and X protectees and this will be finished by next week,” said a senior police officer.

Senior officers say security audits are usually carried out before August 15 and January 26, but after the Uri attacks and the current festive season which means more public visits for the dignitaries, it was thought necessary to review the arrangements.

The Delhi police has instructed all Ramlila committees in the city to deploy private security guards, night vision cameras and additional CCTVs for better security cover of the venues.

The three Ramlilas that are held in the Lal Quila Maidan in front of the iconic Red Fort, together annually see a gathering of over 50,000 per day during Navratri season and climbs to more than a lakh on the day of Dussehra.

The officials of the north district have held meetings with the Lav Kush Ramlila Committee, Shri Dharmic Leela Committee and Nav Shri Dharmik Lila Committee to apprise them of the security arrangements. “We have asked the Ramlila organisers to ensure that there are fixed entry, exit and emergency gates, so that entry of people can be regulated. We have asked them to ensure proper frisking of people. There are DFMDs installed at the entry points,” said DCP (North) Madhur Verma

“We have installed revolving cameras and night vision cameras so that there is clear footage recorded from all the strategic locations like entry and exit points, place where the crowd sits and watches the Ramlila and eating area,” said Rahul Sharma, press secretary, Nav Shri Dharmik Lila Committee.

“The number of security guards has been doubled keeping in mind the high alert situation in the capital,” he added.
