Traffic snarls were reported in southeast Delhi’s Ashram area on Tuesday as a slip road was blocked following the dislocation of a gantry crane at a Metro construction site in the area after dust storm that struck the city on Monday evening.

The Delhi traffic police said that the traffic would also remain effected on the stretch on Wednesday. To shift the dislocated gantry, special cranes have been called then only traffic will resumed normal.

“Traffic on the Ring Road towards Mathura Road (along the Ashram flyover) and Bhogal (below Ashram flyover) from the DND expressway side has been diverted since this morning as a precautionary measure after a gantry crane functioning at the under construction Ashram Metro station was dislocated on Monday night due to the heavy storm and wind,” said a senior traffic police official.

The gantry will be dismantled with the help of specialised equipment. All vehicles heading towards Mathura Road or Bhogal from the DND expressway side will have to take the Ashram flyover and then take an U-turn from below the Sriniwaspuri flyover, it said.

Small vehicles going towards Mathura Road can also do so through New Friends Colony. Adequate traffic marshals and temporary signage have been put up at all crucial intersections to inform the motorists, official added.

Traffic snarls were reported in the area in the peak morning hours. Due to damage of Metro gantry, slip road from Maharani Bagh to Ashram Chowk was blocked, a traffic official said. “Motorist going to Faridabad should use Kalindi Kunj or Captain Gaur Marg-Modi Mill road. Congestion in surrounding areas also. Problem to continue for two days,” he added.

Long tailbacks were witnessed in several parts of the city on Monday following dust storm and rains. The areas where severe traffic snarls were reported include ITO junction in central Delhi, Saket in the south and Raja Garden, Uttam Nagar and Peeragarhi areas in western part of the national capital, a traffic official said.

Commuters in central Delhi had a harrowing time passing the ITO junction where the traffic crawled at snail’s pace.
