Timely action saves woman with multiple organ failure

In what doctors describe as a case of timely judgment, a mother of two, who suffered a multiple organ failure along with dengue and jaundice, was given a new lease of life, thanks to the quick action of doctors at a city hospital who conducted an emergency liver transplant in just 36 hours after she was admitted there.

According to the doctors, Rajni, 40, was diagnosed with dengue and jaundice but the treatment at a local nursing home did not help after which the family decided to rush her to B.L.K. Super Speciality Hospital.

“She was admitted at the hospital in and was immediately put on medications. However, due to delay in proper treatment, Rajni’s lungs were affected and her kidneys also failed. She started bleeding from her nose and mouth. She was put on ventilator without delay and given dialysis to support her body functions,” said senior consultant and director, liver transplantation, B.L.K. Super Speciality Hospital, Dr Sanjay Singh Negi.

Dr Negi, along with his team, started the tests and procedures and the surgery, which started in the evening, continued the entire night. It took 15 hours for the team to complete the transplant. The whole procedure took 36 hours.

“Rajni was kept under observations for 5-6 weeks and much to our delight, she started showing signs of improvement. After a long 45-day stay at the hospital, Rajni was discharged and is keeping well now. She has been coming to me for regular follow-up this month and I am happy to see her progress,” added Dr Negi.

Explaining about the quick judgment, Dr Negi said, “We had to make a quick decision to go for a liver transplantation as patient was critical. Lungs can be supported by ventilator and kidneys by dialysis, but liver cannot be treated or healed once damaged, hence a transplant was a necessity.”
