Three-fold hike in penalties for traffic violations in Delhi

The police has implemented an almost three-fold increase in penalties for traffic violations and the AAP government has limited plying and parking of heavy, medium and light good vehicles in the city.

Now any motorist caught for over-speeding will be fined Rs 400 for the first offence and Rs 1,000 for the subsequent violations. For jumping red lights, the first-time offender will have to shell out a penalty of Rs 100 and Rs 300 for the subsequent violations.

The first-timers challenged for drunken driving can be fined by a magisterial court up to Rs 2,000 and sent to jail for a period of six months. And for subsequent offences of drunken driving, the offender can be fined up to Rs 3,000 and face imprisonment for a period of two years.

A traffic alert to this effect has been issued by special commissioner Muktesh Chander following the directions of the Supreme Court on road safety measures. According to the new traffic measures, any person caught using mobile phone can be fined up to Rs 1,000 for the first offence and Rs 2,000 for the subsequent violations. Those driving without helmet or seat belt will be fined Rs 100 for the first offence and Rs 300 for the subsequent violations. Any person carrying passengers on a goods vehicle will be fined Rs 100 for the first offence and Rs 300 for the subsequent violations. The violators will also have to undergo counselling for two hours.

In an attempt to regulate the movement of heavy, medium and light vehicles, the AAP government has limited plying and parking timings on the city roads. A notification issued to this effect by secretary, state transport authority, and special commissioner (transport) K.K. Dahiya said it was necessary in the interest of public, safety and convenience of general public of Delhi to regulate the movement of such vehicles.

Once the notification is published in the official gazette, heavy goods vehicles will not be allowed to ply on 54 roads and areas of the city from 7 am to 11 pm. Earlier, these vehicles were prohibited from plying on these roads from 7.30 am to 9.30 pm only.

The movement of the medium goods vehicles on 29 roads has been prohibited from 7 am to 11 am and 5 pm to 11 pm. Earlier, these vehicles were prohibited from 7.30 am to 11 am and 5 pm to 9.30 pm only. Also, the movement of light goods vehicles has been restricted on 121 roads from 7 am to 11 am and 5 pm to 11 pm. Prior to the notification, these vehicles were prohibited from plying between 8 am to 11 am and 5 pm to 9 pm.
