Three workers were killed and three others were injured after an explosion in a bakery’s oven at Khurenji in east Delhi’s Jagatpuri area early on Thursday morning.

Three workers were killed and three others were injured after an explosion in a bakery’s oven at Khurenji in east Delhi’s Jagatpuri area early on Thursday morning.

The call about the blast in the Aflatoon Market bakery’s large steel oven was received at around 5.20 am, said a Delhi Fire Service officer.

The police and fire service personnel rushed to the spot and started rescuing the workers who were lying injured on the first floor of the building where the oven was kept. The police rushed six workers to the Hedgewar Hospital where three of them were declared dead by the doctors. Three others were admitted to the hospital for treatment of injuries inflicted by the metal pieces.

The deceased workers were identified as 22-year-old Zainul, 21-year-old Sajid and Lifaqat (20). A case has been registered under Sections 304 A (causing death by negligence), 287 (negligent conduct with respect to machinery) and 337 (causing hurt) based on a statement by one of the injured workers, Nazar Alam, said DCP (east) Rishi Pal.

Two other workers, Afsar and Irfan, were also injured in the blast. All the workers of the bakery belong to Farrukhabad in Uttar Pradesh.

The explosion in the oven, measuring about 5X5 feet, occurred either due to malfunction or due to overheating, the police and fire officials said.

“As there was an explosion in the oven, metal pieces, including iron bars, shot out like bullets and hit the workers who were baking items there. There was no fire as it was an electric oven, but the fatal injuries were caused by the sharp-edged metal pieces,” said the Delhi Fire Service officer.
