Four of the 10 terror suspects who were detained by the Delhi police for alleged involvement with a terror outfit were released on Saturday due to lack of adequate evidence.

The Delhi police had detained 13 youth on Wednesday from Chand Bagh area of the city and from Loni area in Ghaziabad after it was found that the youth were allegedly leaning towards the banned Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). They were released by the special cell of the Delhi police after being thoroughly grilled for three days.

The four were freed after investigators said they did not find adequate evidence to prove their involvement in the suspected JeM ring which was busted earlier this week with the arrest of three youth and from whose possession improvised explosive devices were recovered.

“Six youth are still under detention, the case is under investigation. They will be released after confirmation that they are not involved in any terror activity,” said a senior police official.

The police said that there was no illegal detention of youth. They all have been detained as per the legal provision.

“All of the youth have been detained under Section 160 of CrPC to appear before the police for the purpose of investigation,” said a senior police official. The police said that it will seek help from NGOs to de-radicalise the youth who were released from police detention.

“We have launched a campaign to help de-radicalise youth who have fallen prey to the ideology of the terror outfit...” said a police official.

Meanwhile, a senior police officer on Friday claimed that social media played an important role in the radicalisation of the arrested youth. Officers on Friday said the main accused, Sajid, had joined a Facebook page a year ago and came across posts which had contents on “atrocities” against Muslims on it.
