Following inputs of terror attacks in the national capital ahead of Republic Day, the Delhi police and security agencies have devoted maximum attention and resources to thwart any untoward incident, as is evident from the heightened security cover in crowded markets, railway stations, metro stations, malls and other vulnerable targets.
Not only is the Delhi police going tough on encroachers, especially in markets, police gypsies are seen taking rounds round-the-clock. The Delhi police had sounded an alert on Friday in view of recovery of dead body of the driver whose taxi was hijacked by three unidentified men, possibly terrorists, in Pathankot. The driver was found dead in Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh.
The special cell of the Delhi police has even come up with posters of India’s wanted terrorists, possibly hiding in and around the city. The special cell has already been in action by arresting five suspected Al Qaeda Indian module terrorists in the past few days. Several inputs have suggested that Al Qaeda and ISIS are planning to carry out major terror activities in Delhi.
A high level meeting chaired by Delhi police commissioner Bhim Sain Bassi took place on Saturday in view of the security arrangements for January 26.
Highly-placed sources said that all possible measures are being taken into consideration in view of heightened threat perception of a terrorist attack in the city. All SHOs and other officials are being briefed on the threat from terror organisation Islamic State and Al Qaeda Indian sub-continent (AQIS). “A case was filed by the special cell of the Delhi police in June against ISIS, first ever FIR against the terror outfit, after Central security agencies tipped the Delhi police of a possible strike,” a senior police officer said, adding, “We have been explaining the situation to our officers to ensure that all measures are taken to ensure peaceful Republic Day celebrations.”
Sources added that meetings with special cell sleuths are constantly been taking place and the mechanism for flow of threat inputs from anti-terrorism units to local police is being strengthened.
“The special cell is a dedicated anti-terrorism unit of the Delhi police,” said the senior police officer, adding, “We have urged its officers to take regular meetings to inform the local police of possible threats.”
